Best Brain Health Coaches in San Diego (2026 Guide)

By Nancy Ryan, EBHCC | Brain Health

San Diego has no shortage of health coaches. But finding one who specializes in the brain — with the right certifications and framework — is harder than it should be. Here's what to look for.

Why This Guide Exists

If you search "best brain health coach in San Diego" you'll get a lot of directory listings, health coaches who dabble in everything, and a few nutritionists with brain-adjacent keywords. What you won't easily find is a clear breakdown of what separates a real brain health coach from a general wellness coach, and how to actually evaluate one.

I'm Nancy Ryan — an Elite Brain Health Coach Certified (EBHCC) through Amen University, based in San Diego. I'm obviously biased, but that bias means I can tell you exactly what credentials and frameworks matter, because I went through the training.

Use this guide to evaluate any brain health coach you're considering — including me.

What Makes a Coach "Brain Health" (Not Just Health)

The title "brain health coach" isn't legally protected. Anyone can use it. So the first job is checking for real credentials.

Look for at least one of these:

  • EBHCC — Elite Brain Health Coach Certified (Amen University / Dr. Daniel Amen)
  • ABHC — Amen Clinics Brain Health Coach
  • MCHC — Master Certified Health Coach (Dr. Sears Wellness Institute)
  • NBC-HWC — National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (paired with brain-specific specialty training)
  • If a coach claims to specialize in brain health but holds only a generic "health coach" certification with no brain-specific training, that's a yellow flag. Not disqualifying — but ask harder questions.

    The Framework Question

Ask any brain health coach: "What framework or model do you use?"

A real brain health coach should be able to name one immediately. The most common and evidence-informed are:

  • Dr. Daniel Amen's BRIGHT MINDS framework (11 modifiable risk factors) and five brain types
  • Dr. Mark Hyman's functional medicine approach to cognitive health
  • Dr. Dale Bredesen's ReCODE protocol (for cognitive decline / early Alzheimer's)
  • Functional nutrition frameworks grounded in gut-brain axis research
  • If the answer is "I just follow general wellness principles," they are not a brain health coach. They're a health coach who uses the phrase.

Evaluating San Diego Coaches: What to Ask

When you interview a prospective coach, ask:

    1. What brain-specific certifications do you hold, and when were they issued? 2. What framework do you use, and can you describe it in plain English? 3. Who is your typical client — and is my situation (ADHD, brain fog, caregiver burnout, cognitive decline prevention, etc.) one you work with often? 4. What does a 90-day engagement actually look like, week by week? 5. How do you handle the line between coaching and clinical care — when would you refer out to a therapist, psychiatrist, or physician? 6. What is your pricing, and what's your cancellation/refund policy? 7. Can I talk to a past client or read testimonials specific to my concern?

If a coach can't answer these confidently, keep looking.

    Pricing Benchmarks for San Diego

Brain health coaching in San Diego typically runs:

  • Single session: $100–$250 for 60 minutes
  • 3-month / 90-day programs: $1,200–$3,000
  • High-touch 6–12-month programs: $3,000–$8,000+
  • My programs sit in the middle of the market: $150 for a single Brain Health Breakthrough session, $1,597 for the 90-Day Transformation, and $3,697 for the VIP Brain Health Intensive. You can see my full services and pricing on the San Diego Brain Health Coach page.

Anything far below this range — especially programs claiming "brain health" results for under $500 — usually indicates generic coaching with brain health as a marketing angle rather than a specialty.

    Red Flags to Watch For

Run in the opposite direction from any coach who:

  • Claims to "diagnose" or "treat" mental health conditions (they are not licensed to do so)
  • Tells you to stop prescribed medications (absolutely not a coach's role)
  • Refuses to refer you to clinical care when warranted
  • Promises specific cures for Alzheimer's, ADHD, or autism
  • Sells expensive supplement packages that only they can provide
  • Has no clear framework, no certifications, and no client testimonials
  • Specialties Within Brain Health

Not all brain health coaches are right for every client. Common specialty focus areas:

  • ADHD nutrition & lifestyle — dopamine support, blood sugar, sleep, executive function
  • Brain fog & cognitive fatigue — gut-brain, anti-inflammatory nutrition, blood sugar stability
  • Sugar addiction recovery — brain-based cravings, dopamine reset, metabolic strategies
  • Caregiver support — burnout prevention, stress management, sustainable self-care
  • Cognitive decline prevention — BRIGHT MINDS risk-factor reduction, MIND diet, purpose
  • Corporate wellness — team workshops, focus and productivity education
  • Neurodiversity support — autism, ADHD, sensory-based nutrition
  • Match the coach's specialty to your actual goal.

Why San Diego Is a Good Market for This

San Diego has a few things going for it as a brain health coaching hub:

  • The original Amen Clinics (Costa Mesa, a short drive north) has long-standing West Coast influence — many local coaches are Amen-trained or Amen-adjacent
  • An active, longevity-focused population that invests in preventive health
  • Strong biotech and neuroscience research (Salk, UCSD, Scripps) raises the local baseline of scientific literacy
  • Easy access to farmers markets and fresh food — making nutrition recommendations actually implementable
  • If you live here, you have more options than most U.S. cities. Use the questions above to narrow them down.

    How I Fit In

Full disclosure: I'm one of the coaches you'd be evaluating. Here's how I'd score myself against this guide:

  • Certifications: EBHCC (Amen University, January 2026) + MCHC (Dr. Sears Wellness Institute, November 2021)
  • Framework: Dr. Amen's BRIGHT MINDS + five brain types, applied with nutrition-first lens
  • Specialties: ADHD, brain fog, sugar addiction, caregiver support, cognitive decline prevention
  • Pricing: $150 single session → $3,697 VIP Intensive (market-middle)
  • Location: San Diego, in-person and virtual
  • Client fit: busy professionals, caregivers, adults with ADHD, people with family history of Alzheimer's
  • If that profile matches what you're looking for, book a free 15-minute consultation. If it doesn't, use the evaluation framework above to find someone who does.
