You've Read Every Dr. Amen Book — So Why Isn't It Working?

By Nancy Ryan, EBHCC | Brain Health

You've read Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. You listen to the podcast. You take the supplements. So why are you still exhausted, foggy, and stuck? Here's what DIY misses.

You've Done the Reading

Here's the profile of about half my new clients:

They've read Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. Probably The End of Mental Illness too. They listen to the Brain Warrior's Way podcast on their morning walk. They take the supplements. They know their BRIGHT MINDS risk factors by memory. They can tell you the difference between the five Amen brain types at a dinner party.

And they still have brain fog. Still crave sugar at 3 PM. Still sleep poorly. Still feel like something is off.

So what gives?

Knowing Isn't Doing

The gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it is the entire problem. Dr. Amen's books are phenomenal — I recommend them constantly. But a book can only take you so far, because behavior change isn't an information problem.

It's an application problem.

Books can't:

  • Tell you which of the five Amen brain types actually fits your specific symptom pattern
  • Adjust for your medications, family history, and the specific cognitive issue you're trying to solve
  • Hold you accountable weekly when life gets busy and the protocol slips
  • Adapt your plan when something isn't working
  • Answer the "but what about my situation?" question you have at 10 PM on a Tuesday
  • That's where certified coaching comes in.

What Coaching Adds That Books Can't

I'm certified through Amen University — the training program Dr. Amen created for coaches to take his framework and apply it to individual clients. Here's what that looks like in practice:

    1. Brain-Type Identification Specific to You

Books describe the five brain types broadly. In coaching, we identify your brain type using the Amen questionnaire plus a clinical interview, and tailor every recommendation around it. A distracted brain gets a different plan than an anxious brain. A low-dopamine ADHD brain gets a different plan than a cingulate "stuck" brain.

    2. Personalized BRIGHT MINDS Prioritization

BRIGHT MINDS has 11 risk factor categories. Most people reading the books try to address all 11 at once and abandon the effort within a month. In coaching, we identify your top 2–3 risk factors and sequence interventions so they actually stick.

    3. Weekly Accountability

This is the unglamorous truth: most sustained behavior change comes from weekly accountability. Clients in my 90-Day Transformation program meet with me every week. That cadence is why people who have read every Amen book finally see sustained change — because the coach holds the line when motivation dips.

    4. Real-Time Adjustment

Supplements that worked for someone in the book don't work for everyone. Foods that are theoretically brain-healthy can trigger symptoms in specific people. A coach adjusts your plan based on what's actually happening in your body — something no book can do.

    5. Problem-Solving Around Real Life

Your teenager's soccer schedule. Your aging mother's medical appointments. Your travel-heavy work week. A coach builds your brain health plan around the actual constraints of your life — not an idealized version of it.

Coaching vs Amen Clinics: A Different Conversation

There's a separate question people ask: "Should I just go get a SPECT scan at Amen Clinics?"

A full Amen Clinics clinical evaluation — including SPECT imaging, psychiatric assessment, and a treatment plan — typically runs $3,500–$5,000+ depending on location and scope. It's the right call if:

  • You have complex psychiatric symptoms that warrant imaging
  • Standard psychiatric care hasn't worked and you want a deeper look
  • You're dealing with head trauma history, treatment-resistant depression, or severe ADHD
  • It's overkill if you just want a personalized nutrition and lifestyle plan built on the Amen framework. That's what coaching is for.

I wrote a complete cost and decision comparison here: Amen Clinics Coaching vs DIY Brain Health.

When DIY Is Actually the Right Call

I want to be fair here — DIY works beautifully for certain people:

  • You're highly self-motivated and self-directed
  • Your goals are simple (general brain health, modest sugar reduction, basic nutrition improvements)
  • You don't have complex medications or conditions to factor in
  • You thrive on self-study and don't need accountability
  • If that's you, read the books. Follow the podcast. Implement slowly. You'll do fine.

    When DIY Stops Working

The signals I watch for in discovery calls:

  • "I know what I should be doing, I'm just not doing it consistently" → accountability gap
  • "I've tried three different supplement stacks and nothing is working" → protocol not personalized
  • "I read all the books but I'm still foggy" → application gap
  • "I keep falling off track after 2–3 weeks" → behavior change gap
  • "I'm not sure which of the Amen brain types actually fits me" → brain-type identification gap
  • Any of these means DIY has hit its ceiling and personalized coaching is probably the next step.

    Pricing and Access

My coaching programs are designed to be a middle path between free DIY and a full clinical evaluation:

  • Brain Health Breakthrough — $150 (single 60-minute session; great diagnostic starting point)
  • 90-Day Transformation — $1,597 (12 weekly sessions; my flagship program)
  • VIP Brain Health Intensive — $3,697 (24 bi-weekly sessions over a year)
  • No SPECT imaging required. No medical evaluation required. Just applied Amen framework coaching, tailored to you.

    The Honest Bottom Line

Dr. Amen's books changed my life, which is why I trained through Amen University and built my practice around the work. I recommend them as a starting point, not an endpoint.

If you've read the books and something still isn't clicking — you probably don't need another book. You need someone to apply the framework to your specific brain, your specific life, and hold you accountable while you actually do the work.

That's what coaching is for. Book a free 15-minute consultation and we'll figure out if it's the right next step for you.
