Here's a fact that surprises almost every client I share it with: approximately 90% of your body's serotonin is produced in your gut, not your brain.

Serotonin is often called the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, but it does far more than regulate mood. It influences:

  • Mood and emotional stability
  • Sleep quality (serotonin converts to melatonin)
  • Appetite and satiety
  • Pain perception
  • Cognitive function and memory
  • Gut motility and digestion
  • The specialized cells in your gut lining — called enterochromaffin cells — produce serotonin in response to the food you eat and the state of your microbiome. When your gut is inflamed, damaged, or populated by unhealthy bacteria, serotonin production is disrupted.

    This is why so many people with digestive issues also struggle with depression, anxiety, and brain fog. It's not a coincidence — it's biochemistry.

    Leaky Gut and Brain Inflammation

    One of the most damaging gut conditions for brain health is intestinal permeability, commonly called "leaky gut."

    In a healthy gut, the intestinal lining acts as a selective barrier — allowing nutrients through while keeping toxins, undigested food particles, and bacteria contained. This barrier is maintained by tight junctions between the cells of your intestinal wall.

    When these tight junctions break down — due to chronic stress, poor diet, alcohol, medications (especially NSAIDs and antibiotics), or infection — the gut becomes "leaky."     This inflammation doesn't stay in your gut. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and creates neuroinflammation — inflammation inside the brain itself. Neuroinflammation is now recognized as a major driver of:

  • Ginger — supports digestive motility and reduces intestinal inflammation
  • Leafy greens — fiber and polyphenols that nourish beneficial microbes
  • Foods to Minimize

  • Refined sugar — feeds harmful bacteria and yeast, promotes dysbiosis
  • Artificial sweeteners — research shows they negatively alter microbiome composition
  • Ultra-processed foods — contain emulsifiers and additives that damage the gut lining
  • Excessive alcohol — directly increases intestinal permeability
  • Gluten (for sensitive individuals) — can trigger zonulin release, which opens tight junctions
  • Probiotics and Prebiotics: Supplementing Wisely

    While food should always come first, targeted supplementation can accelerate gut-brain healing:

    Probiotics: Look for multi-strain formulas with at least 10–30 billion CFUs. Key strains with brain health research include:

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus — shown to reduce anxiety behavior through vagus nerve signaling
  • Bifidobacterium longum — associated with reduced cortisol and improved cognitive performance
  • Lactobacillus helveticus — linked to mood improvement in clinical trials
  • Prebiotics: Supplemental prebiotic fibers like inulin, galactooligosaccharides (GOS), and acacia fiber can boost beneficial bacteria populations when dietary fiber intake is insufficient.

    L-Glutamine (2–5g daily): An amino acid that serves as the primary fuel source for intestinal cells and supports gut barrier repair.

    Always introduce probiotics and prebiotics gradually — too much too fast can cause temporary digestive discomfort as your microbiome adjusts.
