Low vitamin D is linked to higher rates of low mood, poorer focus, and faster cognitive decline, and deficiency is genuinely common.

Here is the part most people get wrong: the popular claim that 70% of Americans are deficient is overstated. The real numbers from national NHANES survey data are still significant. Roughly 29% of US adults are deficient in vitamin D and about 41% have insufficient levels. That is a large share of the population walking around low.

As a brain health coach, I treat vitamin D as a foundation nutrient. It is cheap to test, easy to correct, and the brain benefits when it is in a healthy range.

What Vitamin D Does in the Brain

Vitamin D is involved in several brain-relevant processes:

  • Supports the production of mood-related neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine
  • Helps regulate inflammation in the brain
  • Plays a role in the growth and survival of brain cells
  • Supports the immune system, which interacts closely with brain health
  • When levels drop too low, these systems do not work as smoothly. That can show up as low mood, mental fatigue, and foggy thinking.

    Vitamin D and Mood

    The connection between low vitamin D and low mood is one of the most studied. Observational research consistently links low vitamin D to higher rates of depression, and this fits with what many people feel in the darker winter months when sun exposure drops.

    A fair summary of the research: correcting a genuine deficiency may help mood, but loading up on vitamin D when your levels are already normal does not appear to give extra benefit. The goal is a healthy range, not a high number.

    Vitamin D and Long-Term Brain Health

    Several large observational studies have linked low vitamin D to a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. This does not prove vitamin D prevents dementia, but it adds to the case for keeping your level in a healthy range across your lifetime, especially as you age.     How to Get Tested

    This is the most important step, and it is simple. Ask your doctor for a 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) blood test. It is the standard measure of your vitamin D status.

    General reference points many clinicians use:

  • Deficient: below 20 ng/mL
  • Insufficient: 20 to 29 ng/mL
  • Sufficient: 30 ng/mL and above
  • Many brain-health and functional-medicine practitioners aim for the upper end of the normal range, often around 40 to 60 ng/mL, but this is individual. Test first, then decide with your provider. Do not guess.

    How to Get More Vitamin D

    Sunlight is the body's main natural source. When sunlight hits your skin, your body makes vitamin D. Roughly 15 to 30 minutes of midday sun on bare skin several times a week helps many people, though this varies a lot by skin tone, latitude, season, and sunscreen use. Morning sun also supports your circadian rhythm and sleep, which is a nice bonus for the brain.

    Food sources of vitamin D include:

  • Fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel
  • Egg yolks
  • Fortified foods like milk and some cereals
  • Cod liver oil
  • UV-exposed mushrooms
  • Food alone rarely gets most people to a healthy level, which is why testing matters.

    Supplementing Safely

    If your blood test shows you are low, a vitamin D3 supplement is the usual fix. Common maintenance doses range from 1,000 to 2,000 IU per day, with higher correction doses sometimes used short term under medical guidance.

    A few safety notes:

  • Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so it builds up. More is not better, and very high doses over time can be harmful.
